Biography
H. Viernstein studied Pharmacy at the University of Vienna and received his Master’s degree in 1977. After his PhD-study at the Austrian Research Center Seibersdorf, Division Life Sciences, he graduated as doctor of natural sciences in 1981. After several postdoctoral fellowships in Berlin, Freiburg, etc. he became assistant professor at the University of Vienna and obtained his habilitation in the field of pharmaceutical technology. He acted as visiting professor at the universities of Chiang Mai, Athens, and Innsbruck. Since 1999 H. Viernstein is Full Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmaceutics at the University of Vienna.
Research Interest
The current research focuses on structure studies of new oligosaccharides from plant sources and their biological activities, especially prebiotic effects. Another working group deals with the syntheses of aminosaccharides as building blocks for innovative excipients or chondroprotective agents. In addition, research interests include the complexation of drug substances with selected Cyclodextrins for stabilization, increase of solubility, taste improvement, etc
